FROM THE CHIEF

After reading some comments in a recent e-mail I feel that it is necessary to make sure that there are no misunderstandings about the Cherokee Tribe of Kentucky.

1. We are exactly what we say we are; a Tribe of mixed blood Tsalagi
who have banded together to perpetuate the culture, history, traditions and ceremonies of the Tsalagi.

2. We are NOT federally recognized, we have not filed for, nor do we have any desire or intention to file for federal recognition. We know who we are and we do not need the federal government  to tell us who we are. We have no desire to deprive anyone of money or benefits they receive from the federal government.

3. We do not have State Recognition. However, once the criteria for State Recognition in Kentucky are established the Tribe will make the decision whether to apply or not.

"Cherokee Tribe of Kentucky"

We are mixed-blood Tsalagi whose ancestors either managed some how to escape the Removal or were able to return to their homes after the Removal. We have banded together to perpetuate the culture, history, tradition and ceremonies of the Tsalagi.

We have joined together as Human Beings to work together to;

1. Protect and care for Mother Earth and all creation.

2. Render aid to any Native American Indian regardless of Tribal affiliation.

3. Educate not only our descendants, but all who desire to learn the Tsalagi way.

4. Set an example through our lives and actions for all to see what a Tsalagi really is and what it means to walk the Path.

5. Work together, with hope and prayer in our hearts, to bring all Native American Indians together, as one, for the common good.

As members of the "Cherokee Tribe of Kentucky" we have pledged to conduct ourselves as individuals, and as a People, by the following Principles;

1. Treat the Earth, and all that dwell thereon, with Respect.

2. Remain close to the Great Spirit.

3. Show great Respect for your fellow beings.

4. Work together for the benefit of all Mankind.

5. Give assistance and kindness whenever and wherever needed.

6. Do what you know to be right.

7. Look after the well being of mind, body and spirit.

8. Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater good.

9. Be truthful and honest at all times.

10. Take full responsibility for your actions.

We further pledge to be a People of Respect, Integrity, Honor and Peace.

Enrollment in the "Cherokee Tribe of Kentucky" is open to anyone with Cherokee blood. Here are the answers to some common questions.

1. How much Cherokee blood do I have to have?

We do not have a blood quantum. So feel free to write us.

2. What if I can't document my Cherokee ancestry?

Because many records were not kept, or Cherokees hid their true identity, it is difficult for many to "document" their ancestry and often must rely on information that has been passed down through the family. We are fortunate to have several Tribal members who have become somewhat proficient in genealogical research. Submit the information you have and we will try to help you find more.

4. How do I enroll?

Contact the Tribal Office for an Enrollment Application, fill it out the best you can and send it back.

I Be Tsalagi*

This morning I looked in the mirror,
I stared intensely at what I saw,
Trying to figure out if it was
My eyes, my nose or my jaw.
Maybe it's my ears, I thought,
or maybe it's my chin,
I'm sure that I will figure out
what is my "part' that is Indian.
Maybe it's my arms or hands
or some little internal gland,
I sure hope I can soon find out
what "part" is Indian.
You see to some that means a lot
to them it's a big deal,
So maybe it's my knees or toes
or maybe my left heel.
But, you see, I don't understand
what this "part" stuff means,
Because in my heart I know
just who and what I be.
That from the top of my Tsalagi head,
to the tip of my Tsalagi toes,
With every beat of my Tsalagi heart
Every fiber of me knows
That it is not the "degree of blood"
That makes me what I be.
It is the spirit of Tsalagi
that dwells within, you see.
So with every breath I take
I'm as sure as I can be
that

I BE TSALAGI!!
