Dear Tribal Family,
As many of you should know we have entered into a cooperative agreement with the Mantle Rock Native Education & Cultural Center. One of the results of this relationship is that the Tribe will grow by over 100 members. I would like to present another idea for your input, I am suggesting the to further identify with this important location in the history of our People, that we change the name of the Tribe to the Mantle Rock Cherokee Tribe of Kentucky, this would also allow us to go under the 501(c)3 Tax Exempt status of the Center.
I also need some help in locating some of our Tribe, if you know of anyone who has moved within the last year please have them send their new address to the Tribal Office as soon as possible. Also some time this fall we will be scheduling a Tribal Meeting/work weekend at the Center. We need to do this before we apply for State Recognition sometime in 2009. Let me know about the name change as soon as you can.
I don’t like to talk about money, but unfortunately everything costs money. I feel that if your Tribe is important then you should want to help support it. Up until now I was able to work enough overtime to cover the expenses of copier paper, ink, envelopes and postage. However, because of my health I can no longer work 10-20 hours overtime, plus in January 2009 I will be returning the college to complete my degree in Psychology. I know times are rough and money is tight, but if every adult member were to send at least $7.00 per month that would cover all the expenses of printing and mailing of Enrollment Applications, Enrollment Certificates & Cards , a bi-monthly newsletter and help maintain The Mantle Rock Center.
I am also happy to announce that Silas Ward has agreed to be the Tribal Registrar.
Wado, (Thank You)
Marty Martin
Chief, Cherokee Tribe of Kentucky
Director, Mantle Rock Native Education & Culture Center
Although Mantle Rock is not very well known by many people, it was part of “The Trail of Tears” and important sacred place in Cherokee history. In the winter of 1938-1939 3,000 of our People arrived there on the banks of the Ohio River. Because the river was frozen and impassable so they camped in the shelter of Mantle Rock. At least 260 men, women and children died there.
This is why I feel that our relationship with the Center is so important and why I am suggesting that we remember and honor those who died there by taking the name of the Mantle Rock Cherokee Tribe of Kentucky.
I also want to apologize for not responding quickly to emails and posts on site. I will attempt to do as better job in the future.
COMING EVENTS
As soon as the information is available I will post the schedule for 2009 Powwows in Kentucky.
